Taksim Square - The Heart of Istanbul

Or you may be visiting the Monument of the Republic, a landmark statue that sits in the square, commemorates the founding of the modern Turkish state in 1923. Located in the European part of Istanbul, Taksim Square is a major public square, tourist and leisure district and public meeting place. The area around Taksim is packed with restaurants, shops, cafes, and attractions and it is a central meeting place for social gatherings. As a visitor, staying at a hotel near Taksim will ensure that you have convenient access to much of the city. This is especially true if you plan to take any trips outside the center of the city, as Taksim is a hub of Istanbul’s metro, tram, and bus networks.


Arriving at Your Istanbul Hotel

Transport via Shuttle to Taksim Transport from the airport to central Istanbul is simple and convenient. You can simply hop on a shuttle from Ataturk Airport to Taksim Meydanı (Taksim Square), which is very close to the Hotel Büyük Keban. The Havatas shuttle agency operates frequent shuttles for 10 TL per person (about 7 euros), and no reservation is necessary. Shuttles run every thirty minutes between 4:00 am and 1:00 am. Luggage is included in the cost, and the trip takes approximately 40 minutes, depending on traffic. From Taksim Square, you can then easily and inexpensively take a cab to the Hotel Büyük Keban. We are very close to Taksim Square and it costs around 12 TL (8 euros) for the taxi. This option is quick and easy, and runs 15 euros total. Keep in mind, however, that if you have more than three people in your group, for about the same price you can simply take a taxi from the airport to the hotel.


Transport via Direct Metro Line

If you really want to go local and take local transportation, you can choose the Istanbul metro. It’s speedy, simple, and hassle-free, and a serious bargain. A one-way trip is only about 2 TL - less than a euro! You simply find the ticket office and buy an “Istanbulkart” - a rechargeable card that you fill up with transportation credit. The non-refundable card costs 6 TL, which offers a discount of about 10 per cent on the already cheap prices on public transport. An added bonus: the card is valid for up to 5 people. The metro station at Ataturk Airport is located at the ground level. The first station on the line is the airport itself, and the Hotel Büyük Keban is at the final station, named “Aksaray”. After exiting the metro at Aksaray, keep walking towards Laleli and make a left on Gencturk Caddesi. (Gencturk Avenue). The Hotel Büyük Keban will be on your left at the end of the street. It’s about a 10-minute walk.
