Places To Visit With Your Family

Hagia Sophia

It is currently a museum, but is rich in history as it was a former Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica and an imperial mosque. Its name means “holy wisdom,” and is one of the most visited museums in the world. With its domed monument, it is easily recognized for its Byzantine architecture. It has withstood both wars and earthquakes and is an amazing structure!

Blue Mosque

It’s also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque but because of its blue tiles on the interior walls, it’s called the Blue Mosque. The mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 on the site that was the palace of the Byzantine emperors. It has one main dome, six minarets, and eight secondary domes. When the sun sets, it is brilliantly lit up with colored floodlights.

Topkapı Palace

Now a popular museum to visit, it once was the main residence of the Ottoman sultans. Inside, it has important holy relics of the Muslim world, such as the cloak and sword of Muhammed. It was originally constructed in 1459 and has been expanded over centuries. Major renovations occurred after the 1509 earthquake and the fire in 1665. It has spectacular views of the Golden Horn, the Marmara Sea and the Bosphorus.

The Hippodrome

Today it’s a square with several famous monuments. It once was the heart of Constantinople and the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The stone Column of Constantine Porphyrogenetus lies on the southwestern end and dates back to the tenth century.

Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı)

It’s one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. It boasts over 4,000 shops and 60 covered streets. You’ll find a little bit of everything here, such as jewelry, rugs, handbags, and clothing.
